Going MIA

On Saturday I will be driving 12 hours with my 2 year old son and 10 month old dog. We will be going to visit our family back home. I wish my hubby could come with us but sadly he has to stay in AIT so it will be me doing all the driving. We will miss him so much! Anyways, you probably think I am crazy going on a long drive with a toddler and a puppy but if your family is in the military this is actually pretty common. I can handle it. I'm not worried about the long drive. This will be the third time I have done it by myself, second with my son and first with our puppy, his name is Marley, if you were wondering.

Important tips on driving with a toddler:

A portable DVD player is a MUST! It will keep your toddler entertained and you from going crazy listening to whining do to boredom from being in the car. Throw in some Spongebob, Toy Story or Elmo and your set to go! At least for a little while...

If the DVD player no longer entertains them then switch to crayons and a coloring book. These will occupy my son for a good hour before he tries to eat them or color on something other than a coloring book. And when that stops working...

SNACK TIME! You know those little containers that have the cover your kid can put his hand through and not spill anything? What are those called anyways? Whatever they may be called they are great! Just fill it up with goldfish, crackers, cereal no milk of course, and whatever else your kid may like. However, they are only good until your son figures out how to pull the top off with his teeth and then when that happens it's no longer spill proof. Oh well, you tried. Now on to drinks! I would say juice boxes are a great idea but if your child is like mine then that's a really bad idea. My son likes to squeeze them and get the juice all  over the place then he's crying because he's all sticky and his clothes are all wet. I mean it's easy enough to change the clothes but what if the car seat gets wet? How many people travel with a spare car seat? Does anyone really do that? Can you imagine having two car seats in the back for one kid? Maybe rich people would do that but not me. What if someone asked you, Oh two car seats how old is your other child? And they would reply; " oh no, I only have one child but you know on long car trips it's nice for them to get a change of scenery or if they spill juice or pee in their seat then we just switch over to the next one!" Wow how convenient for them! Anyways, I've really managed to get off track with that one. If you can't afford a second car seat then just fill spill proof sippy cups with juice, water, or milk and store them in a small cooler on the front seat next to you so you have easy access.

These tips should take up about 5 hours of your 12 hour trip. For next 7 hours pray your kid falls asleep because your going to have one hell of a long ride if they don't. I should also mention that a 12 hour trip with a toddler and a dog will turn into a 16 hour trip with all the stopping you have to do. Dog has to pee, stop for gas then you have to pee. Of course when you have to go to the bathroom that could take anywhere from 15 mins to a half hour. You get your self out of the car then go around and unbuckle your kid, try to keep the dog from jumping out while shutting the door, (don't forget to take your keys with you before you lock the door! I've locked them in the car while they were still in the ignition and the car was running..thank God for AAA!) then struggling with your kid because he wants to walk by himself but you really need to pee so you want to carry him, once you actually make it to the rest room of course there's a huge line and no one will let you cut them, then when you finally get into the stall it's all you can do to pee and keep your kid from trying to crawl under into the next stall or peak his head out to see what the other person is doing or open the thing where you throw used pads and tampons...By now 15 mins have gone by! When you finally make it back to the car after attempting to wash your hands (I know carry sanitizer in my purse so when we get back to the car I'll use that instead) and you get your kid all strapped in while trying to make sure your dog doesn't an escape you notice a familiar smell coming from your child. And you have to take him out and decide if you want to attempt using the changing table in the rest room or the front passenger seat. I do the passenger seat. Too many people stare when you use the rest room changing table. Anyways, you get them changed and buckled back in and you realize another 10 mins have gone by. A simple potty run turned into 25 mins.

I'm not sure how I started on all this. I only planned on saying we were going on a trip and will be back in a week....

So see you all in a week!
